Salem-Keizer Public Schools uses SchoolMessenger notification service to send important information to families. SchoolMessenger is also referred to as the autodialer.
SchoolMessenger is the district’s primary way to communicate with parents in urgent situations, such as school closures due to inclement weather. Schools also use the auto-dial system to send information about important dates and notices.
How Messages are Sent
SchoolMessenger will send the same message to parents three different ways:
- In a recorded voice phone call.
- In an email containing a link to the recorded voice message. Email messages may also include a text version of the recorded message.
- In a text message containing a link to the recorded voice message, or a shortened text version of the recorded message.
Messages are sent through three different channels to ensure parents receive information. This redundancy is important in case one or more methods of communication are out of service.
Parents may unsubscribe from receiving some types of phone messages by contacting their school. Parents may not unsubscribe from receiving phone notifications about emergencies or student attendance.
Parents who do not want to receive email notifications may unsubscribe through a link in a SchoolMessenger email, or by contacting their school.
Parents must opt in to receive text messages. Please read the Text Message section below for more information.
Who Receives Notifications
At the start of each school year, information from student registration forms is input into the student information database. SchoolMessenger receives updated information from this database once each day.
It is very important that parents keep their contact information current. Be sure to let your school office know if you have a new address or phone number.
The parent or guardian marked as the primary contact in the student information system will receive automated communication. Messages will also be sent to the student’s home phone number contained in the database, if different from the primary contact phone number.
All schools in Salem-Keizer use SchoolMessenger to notify parents of students’ unexcused absences and tardies. Typically, parents of elementary students will receive attendance messages in the morning, and parents of secondary students will receive attendance messages at the end of the school day.
For student safety reasons, parents may not opt out of receiving attendance messages.
Wireless carriers require text message recipients to opt in to receive messages from third-party senders like SchoolMessenger.
Cell phone numbers listed in the district’s student information system may receive a text message from SchoolMessenger requesting parents opt in to receive important information from the district via text.
The message will be similar to the following:
So that parents are sure to receive important messages from the school and the district via text, parents are encouraged to opt in to the text message service.
