The Salem-Keizer Healthy and Safe Schools and Buildings Plan includes five major areas: radon, lead in drinking water, lead in paint, integrated pest management and communications.
The Salem-Keizer School District has adopted a radon plan as required by ORS 332.167 and all facilities have been tested. Testing protocols and results are available here.
2. Lead in Drinking Water
The Salem-Keizer School District has adopted a plan for testing all schools, childcare facilities and administrative buildings (owned or leased) for both lead and copper. The District has chosen its own action level of 15ppb, which is more stringent than the 20ppb action level set by the EPA. The EPA action level for copper is 1.3ppm. Testing protocols and results are available here.
The Salem-Keizer School District is working in collaboration with other school districts to determine a reasonable and sustainable retesting cycle. While there is no available research-based approach to retesting for lead in drinking water, the District is considering a retesting cycle of ten percent of its owned and leased buildings every year.
3. Lead in Paint
The Salem-Keizer School District is in full compliance with the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting Program Rule by ensuring that both contractors and District staff are certified and trained to perform the necessary work.
